Questions and AnswersVote for: What do you think of the One Laptop Per Child's XO-3 prototype tablet?
olpc | May 27th, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson
These rugged, low-power computers use flash memory instead of a hard drive, and come with a distribution of Linux derived from Red Hat's Fedora as their pre-installed operating system, which comes stored in both a copy on the flash memory and in the on-board ROM backup. Are you excited about this latest offering from the OLPC foundation?

This shirt uses LEDs and an arduino processor to display your volume of incoming email. It lets everyone in the meeting know how much work you're missing to be there.

Vote for: iPad or Pixel Qi - which screen is better?
displays | Jun 1st, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson
As this video demonstrates, there are significant differences between the display used on the iPad and the new Pixel Qi display that is used in the Notion Ink Adam tablet. When exposed to the harsh, bright light of a mid-day sun, the difference in visibility becomes crystal clear. Which of these two displays do you think performs better?

Vote for: Would you buy a flash-based hard drive that mounts directly on your motherboard's USB Header?
usb | Apr 27th, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson

| Yes! That's a great way to integrate flash storage into a system. |

| No, I'd rather connect it externally, through a USB port. |
ATP Electronics released an internal USB solid state storage device. The device sits on one USB internal header cluster on the motherboard (occupying headers for two ports), to provide fixed storage of up to 4 GB in a package that measures 8.2 (L) x 15.3 (W) x 6.2 (H) mm. The package is dust, vibration and ESD resistant. It uses single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash chips, and provides speeds typical to storage devices connected over USB 2.0, around 30 MB/s. The device is said to be industrial-grade, and can be deployed in embedded computers. The package is advertised to be extremely durable, making use of the System In Package (SIP) technology that protects vital components.

Vote for: Do you like the Oil Reporter app for iPhone?
iphone | May 25th, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson
This iPhone app, which lets Gulf Coast residents record every oily bird and patch of ruined swampland, is about fixing things. Oil Reporter isn't that different from any other crowdsourced reporting app, technically speaking. In terms of raw functionality, it's not that different from, say, the app AT&T has its customers use to report dropped calls: Each report contains relevant information about the location, time and circumstances of the incident, which presumably help the recipient fix the problem. Do you like this app, or would you rather just use the phone?

Vote for: What do you expect from Microsoft's upcoming Internet Explorer 9.0 codebase?
ie9 | May 3rd, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson

| It's the next step in the evolution of web computing. |

| It's just a routine update of a pedantic standard. |
Microsofthas announced that the next version of Internet Explorer will only support H.264, to the exclusion of all other video formats. What do you think of this, and the other changes they're making to the standard web experience?
