Before SATA became the de facto standard, computers used to interface with large, high-speed drives using a SCSI interface. These large, multi-pin interconnects provided significant bandwidth and robust reliability. Because they are phasing out of popularity, you can find large old disc arrays for sale cheap, but then you will need a SCSI card to allow your computer to use them.
