University of Tokyo, Japan. A system developed by lab members Takashi Nakashima and Yoshihiro Watanabe, lets you scan a book by rapidly flipping its pages in front of a high-speed camera. They call this method book flipping scanning. According to Automaton blogger Erico Guizzo, they can digitize a 200-page book in one minute, and hope to make that even faster.

Vote for: What do you think about the 2010 illusion of the year?

2010 illusion of the year | May 12th, 2010 | by Brandon

I have no thoughts about it

In this video, wooden balls roll up the slopes just as if they are pulled by a magnet. The behavior of the balls seems impossible, because it is against the gravity. The video is not a computer graphic, but a real scene. What is actually happening is that the orientations of the slopes are perceived oppositely, and hence the descending motion is misinterpreted as ascending motion. This illusion is remarkable in that it is generated by a three-dimensional solid object and physical motion, instead of a two-dimensional picture. This simple yet confounding model was named the Illusion of the Year by the Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences, Japan.

If you're one of those people who uses a personal MiniDisc recorder, you will need to find MiniDiscs that are blank, so that you can record your own audio. They can be hard to come by in brick and mortar shops, but if you're online you can find good blank MiniDiscs for sale from many different vendors. Which of these blank MiniDiscs do you like the best?

Providing proper security can be expensive, what with the hassle of investing in real video cameras, networking them, recording what they capture, and paying someone to monitor them all. Many companies choose a much cheaper alternative; fake cameras that act to deter crime by providing the illusion that everything is being recorded. Which of these fake security cameras do you like the best for your theft and vandalism deterring?
