Vote for: Would you build a Flash Destroyer?
flash ram | May 27th, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson

| I would totally build one so I can chart my flash drives' longevity. |

| Not for me. I'll just burn my old drives, thanks. |
EEPROMs, such as flash memory, store data in electronic devices like cell phones, smart cards, SD cards, and solid-state drives. This type of memory can only endure a limited number of writes, it will eventually wear out and it won’t store new data. The Flash Destroyer explores that limit by writing and verifying a common EEPROM chip, rated for 1 million writes, until it burns out. Would you like to build one?

Vote for: What do you think of the new Hitachi-LG Hy-Drive?
storage | Jun 1st, 2010 | by Owen Ferguson

| That's a cool solution. |

| I'd rather just have an optical drive. |

| I'd rather just have a static ram drive. |
Hitachi-LG today announced a joint venture to build the world's first hybrid optical/static ram drive, the HyDrive. This unique device is a notebook optical drive with an SSD built right into the casing, so when you slide it into your machine and it connects via SATA 3Gbps, your computer recognizes not only a DVD burner or a Blu-ray drive, but also a 32GB or 64GB SSD. Do you like this idea of combining devices in a single drive bay?
