With the unveiling of the new iPhone 4 a world of possibilities are now open for augmented reality applications. Augmented reality, or AR as it is referred to in the industry, is the ability to adapt or change your perception of the world in real time through computer generated enhancements. A great example is watch sports on TV and constantly seeing visual displays of the score, stats and other events happen during the game. Think of AR as a second layer added to reality giving you more insight, more information or just more fun whenever you need it.

The new iPhone 4 allows users to interact with augmented reality in brand new ways. AG uses cameras, GPS, and other video/audio/tracking combinations to display digital applications as they are overlaid on your phone screen. The iPhone 4 has both front and back cameras as well as a brand new internal gyroscope which allows the iPhone to interpret GPS data as well as its physical presences (such as if your holding the phone near the ground or above your head). These new features allow augmented reality applications the tools and freedom to begin creating a new world of digital information and interaction.

The possibilities that AG applications can provide is only limited to the imagination. For example, an AG game of chess might use digital pawns to run the game, but then over lay the pieces on the table in front of you, reading the visual information of the real world and combining it with digital information to display the game on your screen as if the pieces where actual on the table before you. This type of integration between digital information and real world raw data is what allows the iPhone 4 to create applications that are not only practical but fun too.
