Apple iPhone 4 Antenna Press Conference

Analysts, consumers and Wall Street are counting down the minutes to Apple's Friday press conference. The topic is confirmed to be the maelstrom of issues surrounding the iPhone 4, Apple's latest hot product. However, details are scarce from the notoriously secretive technology giant. All that is known is the conference will begin at 10 am at Apple's Cupertino, California headquarters.



The iPhone 4 has been the subject of intense scrutiny since release. A new design in which the antenna wraps around the perimeter of the phone's case has led to what is popularly defined as "the death grip". A user simply holds the phone in a certain manner and the phone's antenna is rendered impotent. The hold of the phone is particularly galling to left-handed users who unconsciously block the antenna frequently.

However, internal Apple sources are reporting that the antenna issue was noticed long before production. Trusted product reviewer Consumer Reports has marked the iPhone 4 not recommended. Charles Schumer, senator from New York, is asking Apple for a decisive explanation with the possible threat of federal attention. Schumer is concerned that Apple is simply pushing the blame onto consumers for a terminally flawed product. Class-action lawsuits are also pending.



At the press conference, Apple must apologize sincerely and admit to the antenna hardware flaw instead of ignoring it or blaming the iPhone's software again. The company must also compensate users to a degree, whether by offering free cases, making a recall or showing a design upgrade. A clear and detailed explanation is needed.



With an angry confluence of legal, political and consumer forces gathering, Apple's conference will need to hit a virtual grand slam to appease everyone.
