Sony has announced its plans to try to catch up with Nintendo’s lead on motion sensing controllers. The day after Microsoft announced Kinetic (also known as Project Natal) Sony has debuted the PlayStation move a wireless motion sensing controller.

The PlayStation Move like Nintendo’s Wii controller uses two controllers. The Move Motion Controller features a large orb on the front of the controller. This orb can be to set to glow in a whole range of colors. The Move tracks motion using this orb in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye. The Eye uses the visual cues from the orb to track both movement and distance. The controller also uses a pair of inertial sensors to track movement. It also has an internal magnetometer which is used to balance input from the other sensors. The controller also features many of the familiar buttons from more typical play station controllers. This is paired with the PlayStation Move navigation controller, this controller basically copies the functionality of the left side of a normal PlayStation controller, and in fact a normal PlayStation controller can be used instead of the PlayStation Move navigation controller.

Both Sony and Microsoft are trying to break into the casual family game playing market. This Market has been dominated by the Nintendo Wii. The Wii’s low cost and abundance of easy to pick up family games gave it a strong sprint out of the gate. Microsoft’s Kinetics integration with the 360’s media center functionality make it more than just a game controller; in fact you can’t even really call it a game controller since it simply watches movement, there is no controller. Price however is an obstacle for both the Move and The Kinetic. The price of the PlayStation and 360 consoles limits them to use by hardcore gamers and so far hardcore gamers have shown little to no interest in these types of motion controllers. Only time will tell if these new controllers can mimic the success of Nintendo.
